Recently we have received a few requests about highlights and recommendations to do in
Istanbul , Turkey. Istanbul has such a rich and deep history, truly there is something wonderful to
be seen around every corner. These are a few of our must see recommendations in central Istanbul. Like I said Turkey has deep, rich, and beautiful history so it was hard to narrow it down but these are my
top five places in Istanbul.
From a church to a mosque and now museum, this is one of the most interesting places and spaces to visit. It sits stoically, its dusty rose coloring against the sky. Once inside you see this juxtaposition between Christian paintings and beautiful writings from the Qur’an. The other amazing part of Hagia Sophia is the history. As you step on the stones you can feel the steps of thousands of people who came before you.
Sultanahmet Camii, also known as, Blue Mosque
Across from Hagia Sophia, with a lovely blue color in response to Hagia Sophia’s red is the Blue Mosque. While it is most commonly known as the Blue Mosque its real names are: Sultanahmet Camii (Sultan Ahmed Mosque or Sultan Ahmet Mosque) Now, it is important to say that Turkey is full of beautiful Mosques and especially in Istanbul there are a ton but the Blue Mosque is extremely beautiful. However, it is important to note, for respect of the religion be prepared to wear a headscarf or other clothing. Also, know that that it is not a museum, it is a house of prayer, therefore there are certain times that the Mosque is not available to the public so plan accordingly.
Blue Archaeological Park
If you like to people watch like we do, or just curl up with a good book this place should be high on your list! This open space in-between the two places mentioned above serves as an amazing place to experience Turkey. From the smell of chestnuts roasting, to comedic ice cream vendors this is an amazing place to see Turkey.
Basilica Cistern
If you like history and creepy places this is definitely place to see. It served as an old aquifer and is now just a historical, archaeological site. The coolest part about this place is the old Medusa heads hidden throughout the cistern.
Egyptian Spice Market
This was definitely one of my favorite places in all of Turkey. If you like to cook and want to explore and learn more about spices and tea this is an amazing places. This place has spices that I have never heard of or spices that are hard to find. I saw different types of saffron and flower teas that bloomed in your cup. Also, if you like Turkish Delight, not my cup of tea but I recommend you try them, can also be bought here.
